As part of our design and technology unit the children are using their knowledge of electricity, gained from our science topic, to explore and create working circuits using motors in order to create a mechanical buggy. The children have already made excellent progress and the buggies are looking fantastic.

The children started off by discussing and analysing the importance of researching existing products within the same category, e.g. toy cars. We looked at the many different ways toy cars are made and used. The children then completed a specification where they thought about the target audience, its features and how it would work.

We then looked at nets for the top of our buggies. We designed some by hand and on the chrome books using Purple Mash software. The children designed some very effective covers for their buggies, suitable for their target audience.

Once the children had completed all their designs it was time to start making the buggies. The children started by sawing the wood using a hacksaw, to make the base of the buggy. They then gathered all the pieces needed to complete their buggy. The children had the prototype to look at but they worked independently to make a start on putting the buggy together.

They really enjoyed the process from start to finish!
