Maths Megathon!

Posted on May 20 2016

Thursday morning saw the hotly anticipated annual house mathematics competition take place. This year’s Maths Megathon featured three teams of six, working against each other to win the prestigious Mathematics Cup and Shield for their house - Dunham, Moreton or Tatton.  Friendly rivalry between the houses had been mounting with members of Dunham house revelling in their recent ‘win’ at the Swimming Gala,  Tatton had their eye on the prize following their ‘win’ of the Poetry Competition and Moreton members were feeling confident after showing their expertise and success in the World Book Day Quiz. It really could have gone to any of the worthy houses.

The quiz began, eagerness spread across the hall, with the buzzing audience willing their fellow house representatives all the best.  The children were in fine voice as cheering could be heard in the farthest reaches of the school!

Mr Tucker read out the questions with gusto, each of the six rounds started with the youngest children first.  Each question was answered collaboratively, Year 1 and 2 working together, followed by Year 3 and 4, then the children from Year 5 and 6.  Some of the rounds required the whole team to demonstrate their ability to work together to solve problems for example; working out trapezium puzzles and creating chairs and tables with multilink cubes.

The final result ended with a runaway victory for Tatton House with Dunham and Moreton as close runners up. We are very proud of the all the teams and the excellent atmosphere created by the wonderfully supportive audience.  Great fun was had by all.  The children are a real credit to the school!

During the rest of the day, the classes worked together to teach each other a variety of concepts in readiness, to later teach their parents.  In Pre-Prep and Reception, the children learnt how to create patterns, sequences and subtraction games.  Year 1 and 2 built fraction walls and created tangram pictures.  Year 3 and 4 taught one another how to spend and save money, as well as telling the time.  Year 5 and 6  children looked at translation, reflection and playing with numbers in problem solving questions.

Thank you for your highly valued support after school, the children make progress with their own learning just by teaching you!  Inspiring the love learning in maths is key to our school ethos. We hope you enjoyed spending time with your children and taking part in some mathematics activities; hopefully learning some new strategies.

We will be hosting maths workshops for parents in the autumn term which will be specific to each class.  Dates and times for this will be released in the autumn 2016 calendar.  Meanwhile, we hope you find the information pack a useful guidance to support your child’s learning.
