Sale Art Zoo Project

Posted on April 20 2016

“Two by Two have set up an art project to share and honour the great story of Sale-born entrepreneur George Mottershead, founder of Chester Zoo in 1931. His is an inspiring tale of a local man, a hardworking, dedicated visionary man, responsible for creating one of the best zoos in the world.”

Every school in Sale was given the opportunity to take part in this wonderful project and were provided with a life sized model animal to decorate with an original idea. We were lucky enough to receive Percy, our fantastic pelican.

All the children had a hand in decorating Percy; Prep Prep and Reception did an excellent job of painting him, KS1 and KS2 coloured flags from around the world and then deco-patched them all over his body. The children have put in lots of time and effort to help him look perfect ; he is standing on top of the world, symbolising all the countries coming together as one.

When Percy is finally completed, Two by Two will collect him and varnish him with a weatherproof lacquer. The animals will then be displayed across Sale in different locations for the Sale Art Zoo exhibition.

As well as developing creativity, the children have also learnt so much about the history of Chester Zoo and George Mottershead. It is a big part of our school to inspire children about our local history, enriching their understanding and encouraging them to appreciate their local heritage and the environment in which they live.

Percy, our Pelican of Peace, will be on display all summer. He will then be returned to school and given pride of place in our playground for everyone to see.
