Food Glorious Food!

To enhance our Science topic work, Year 2 took part in a Food to Fork workshop at Tesco, Sale.

When we told the children we were going on a school trip to our local Tesco they were a little bit surprised…a school trip to Tesco?!

We were warmly welcomed at Tesco by Lyndsey, who took us to the staff training room. We put on our official looking tabards, collected our clipboards and went on a tour of the store.  ‘Do we work here now Miss?’ asked one of the children.

Our first stop was the fish counter. We put on our plastic gloves and Fred the fish was passed around.  We admired his rainbow scales and then watched, a little horrified, as he was gutted and filleted!  ‘I hate fish!’ exclaimed someone.  It turned out they did like fish fingers however, which led to a rather interesting discussion!

Next stop was the cheese counter, where we were allowed to taste lots of different kinds of cheese and learnt all about how ‘mouldy’ cheese is made. Then on to the Fruit and Vegetable section where we learnt the difference between the two, and went off on a ‘hunt the fruit’ quiz. There were quite a few different types we had not tried before including figs, avocado and beetroot.

Next we visited the warehouse, cold store and even the freezer which felt decidedly wintery! We tasted milk, tzaziki, Ryvita, pitta bread, prunes and all sorts of other exciting, and healthy, foods.

The trip soon came to an end, and we left with our goody bag and free apple! Despite their initial reticence, the children voted that it was ‘THE best school trip ever’ on the way back.  Wait until they get to Burwardsley!

The children were a credit to Forest Park as always, and a big thank you to Tesco in Sale for having us.  For more pictures from our trip please click here.
