Maths in Action

Posted on October 12 2017

Since returning to school in September I have seen so many excellent maths lessons taking place. Last year Active Maths was implemented and it is still proving to be a success. I have observed many outdoor maths activities that are really boosting the enjoyment of maths and attainment.  The children work together in groups to complete maths challenges ranging from sorting shapes to addition loop games.

Maths has already had an impact on one of this year’s school aims ‘to challenge all learners’ as each class have their own set of ‘Chilli Challenge’ cards.  These are problem solving cards that range from being challenging to extra challenging.  The children can choose which challenge they would like to do and can then assess their own learning.  They are given the responsibility to choose a level that will challenge them and it has been great to see so many children challenging themselves to achieve more.

We have a range of online maths challenges available in school and at home. Year 5 have recently started a Sumdog trial, which is an online maths programme. Sumdog has proven, through a recent study, that the length of time spent using Sumdog has a highly significant impact on maths attainment, and students who spent 30 minutes per week on Sumdog progressed twice as fast as those who used Sumdog least.

We also have our continued membership with Mathletics, which is hugely popular with children across the school.

Over the year we aim to take groups of children to a range of maths events and competitions. We have the Primary Maths Challenge coming up for Year 5 and the Stockport Grammar Maths Competition.  We are also hoping to set up an inter school house challenge later on in the year. We are very proud of the children’s attitudes towards maths; they work extremely hard and we look forward to seeing them progress further throughout this year.
