Reception and Year 6 Buddy Trip to Chester Zoo

Posted on March 03 2017

On the 9 February, Year 6 offered to join forces with their buddy in Reception and take on the challenge to navigate their way around Chester Zoo.

The children were split into two groups with one being led by Miss Booth and her 21st century mobile app and the other with Miss Killian and her good, old fashioned paper map.

The children used their problem solving skills to read and follow their preferred choice of map to visit a whole range of different zoo animals including: cheetahs, sloths, pandas, bearded dragons, elephants and giraffes to name but a few!

The children debated on which way to go to ensure they would beat the other group and it turned into quite a competition to see the most enclosures possible.

The children managed to source out the Jaguar picnic room where Miss Killian managed to let in a duck to join in the fun and games of lunch.  It took all five Forest Park adults and a zoo keeper to coax a very fast and smart duck out of the door.

Year 6 learnt that Reception children cannot wait for the toilet and sometimes the excitement of animals mean you really must make a quick dash.  Reception children learnt that Year 6 are like human encyclopaedias, full of lots of random information.

At the end of our wonderful day out, the children were asked to vote on their favourite enclosure and, although it was dark and scary, it seems the bats were the most memorable and smelly.

The journey back to school was very peaceful with lots of sleeping children proving the fresh air, exercise and animals were a success on our grand day out.
