Science Week

Posted on March 20 2017

Well what a spectacular, superb and sensational science week!

All the children took part in some very exciting science experiments throughout the week, the highlight of which was the first Forest Park Paper Airplane Competition. Lots of learning took place as the children discussed aerodynamics, wind and air pressure and the importance of a fair test.  Each child was given the opportunity to compete for their house, with the 3 winners from each year group representing their house in the final. It was lovely for the school to get together on a sunny March morning, to cheer on the competitors. First up were Early Years where Dunja took the title. Year 1 and Year 2 followed, with Donovan as victor, and Year 3 and Year 4 where Ronjay came out on top. Finally Year 5 and Year 6 flew their planes and Surjo’s flew to the finish!  We were then down to the nail-biting champions of champions with Donovan and Surjo battling it out for the overall School Champion title.  It was very close; however Surjo was crowned the winner!

During the week, all classes were busy taking part in lots of other different Science experiments.

Pre-Prep had a look at silly jelly squares and observed them growing right in front of their eyes!

Reception made slime and gloop and got thoroughly messy experimenting with different liquids.

Year 1 went on a walk to look at different materials found in the surrounding area near school.

Year 2 completed 3 different experiments!  ‘Pop a balloon’, ‘flowers to dye for’ and ‘catch a rainbow’. They had great fun observing the different changes that took place. They were also lucky enough to have a special visitor, Mrs Keating, who spoke about the damage that can happen to different materials over time and how this links to her job as a conservator at a museum.

Year 3 looked at solids, liquids and gases and took part in an experiment, ‘How to make an egg float.’

Year 4 also looked at solids, liquids and gases and went outside to model them physically. They also looked at chromatography and asked the question ‘can air be weighed?’ Lots of learning going on in Year 4!

Year 5 did an experiment with milk, food colouring and washing up liquid. They looked at scientific changes and asked lots of questions.

Year 6 were focusing on why things happen.  They tried to predict and answer questions based on 3 different experiments - making slime, paper towel colour mixing and rainbow colour mixing.

Year 1 and 2 finished the week with a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry. They took part in 2 different workshops looking at inventing and engineering and took part in lots of hands on experiments.

We had an amazing week and all agreed we cannot wait to do it all again next year!
