Reception Celebrate Chinese New Year

At Forest Park, we aim to enhance children’s understanding of different faiths, beliefs and cultures in a range of celebrations throughout the year.  This helps them to understand their own place in a wonderfully diverse society and gives them opportunities to experience such diversity. We often invite visitors from our community to share their knowledge and to enhance children's learning of these British Values.

Last week as part of our Chinese New Year celebrations, our Reception class welcomed Elyssa’s mummy, Ms Wu, to school.

The children thoroughly enjoyed finding out about how people celebrate this important festival and enjoyed watching the video clips of the lion dance.  They were very impressed with the skills of the dancers!

In class, they have made dragons in art, practised using chopsticks to help them improve their fine motor skills, learnt how to write letters in Chinese and listened to the story to find out all about the signs of the zodiac. They learned that 2020 is the year of the rat and found out what sign they were born under.

Some children were lucky enough to go to Manchester to watch the dragon dance in the parade and enjoyed sharing their experiences with the rest of the class. They found out that the lucky colour is red; can your child tell you why?

The children who partake in our extra-curricular Chinese Club impressed us with their counting to 10 and showed us how to write numbers in Chinese. All the children then had a try at using finger paint to write numbers in Chinese.

A big thank you to Elyssa’s mummy for coming in to talk to us.
