World Book Day

Posted on March 04 2016

Our World Book Day celebrations started on Tuesday when we were very fortunate to have the author, Damien Harvey, visit the school. He told stories and encouraged everybody to use their imagination to write adventure stories. He led workshops for all of the classes from Pre Prep to Year 6. We found out all about the different stories he has written and how long it takes him to write his books and poems (his quickest was written in 2 hours and the longest was 6 months). Children had lots of questions to ask, including how he got to be an author and how books are made. Finally, parents and children had the opportunity to meet Damian after school and to buy signed copies of his books.

On Wednesday, several parents volunteered to come into school and share their favourite stories with different classes. The children thoroughly enjoyed having stories read to them by mums. A big thank you to all our volunteers!

To celebrate World Book Day, on Thursday every child and member of staff dressed up as a pirate. The costumes were wonderful and Staff were thrilled by the fantastic effort made by everyone .So, many thanks to all our parents for supporting this event so enthusiastically.

The school day started with an inter-house book quiz, won by Moreton House.  Congratulations to the winners and all the children who took part. The pirate theme was continued in the English lessons; the children worked hard in their classes on World Book Day to write a whole school story based on “Fantasy Islands” visited by pirates. Each class wrote a section of the story. We hope you enjoy reading it.  Thursday afternoon was spent creating the Fantasy Islands in art lessons and Mrs Beale treated the children to a wonderful pirate themed lunch.

Finally, our World Book Week finished on a high when Mr Tucker announced the winners of the poetry reciting competition in our Celebration Assembly on Friday.  All in all, a great success!
