Year 1 & 2 Trip to Whitworth Art Gallery

Posted on January 27 2016

Last Friday, the children in Year 1 & 2, set out for another adventure in the wet, windy and cold weather. Luckily, the weather didn’t dampen the children’s spirits, imagination or artistic flair!

On arrival, we were met by Emma, the resident artist at The Whitworth Art Gallery. She encouraged us to think about textures, colours and shapes of materials.

Emma led us through the various galleries, with our final destination being a seat in front of a large 3-D installation, where legend told of spiders weaving large, intricate webs of pure white wool. The children were inspired to draw beautiful sections of the vast white web on to their black paper, the results were impressive.

Following this, the children walked back through to the Green Gallery, where we set up ‘camp’, to create our very own 3-D sculptures inspired by the colour green and the complexity of the web style installation. We worked together in teams, using a variety of materials, threads, hoops and bamboo canes; the finished effect was extraordinarily striking!

After some tasty sandwiches and some fresh air outside, we were ready to explore the exhibits of the Green Gallery in more detail and create our own illustrations in the style of the artist’s displayed.

We all had a wonderful time and Emma was truly inspirational.  Many thanks to The Whitworth Art Gallery for making us all so welcome and providing a truly memorable trip!
