Year 1 Tales of Tinga Tinga!

Year 1 went to discover the artwork of Edward Tingatinga at the Lowry on Friday 4 October as part of our Geography topic, 'Let's go on Safari'.

Edward Saidi Tingatinga, born in 1932 in a tiny village in the Southern region of Tanzania, began a nationwide movement that would revolutionize the way art would be made. Tinga Tinga Art started as a simple idea: use recycled, low-cost materials, like masonite squares, ceramic fragments, and bicycle paint to create art.  His subjects were African icons, such as wildlife or savannah landscapes.

Year 1 learned all about the different patterns and colours Edward Tinga Tinga used to create his African animals. Firstly, the children made their own sketchbooks and produced many drawings of African animals using pastels and focusing on shape, line and pattern. They then drew their favourite animal onto a printing block and printed a pattern using paint. The children also used a variety of materials to create a collage and incorporated African colours and repeating patterns.

The artwork they produced was wonderful and is now on display in the Year 1 classroom.
