Year 1 Topic Work

This term our topic in Year 1 is ‘Houses and Homes’.

The children have already made an excellent start and have produced some wonderful work. The houses they made as homework over the Christmas holiday have created a vibrant display, showing off their art and DT skills.  The children also used the programme 2Design and Make on Purple Mash to create 3D cars for our road.

We are using a cross-curricular approach where most of the curriculum subjects link with our topic. In English, we have been focusing on different books about homes such as ‘The House That Once Was’. This is our favourite so far; we have written descriptions using a wide range of vocabulary and adjectives.

In geography, the children are exploring our local area and have used Google maps to identify different points of interest.  This links in with their science lessons where the children have been identifying everyday materials with Mr. Tucker, and have investigated what materials they can see around the school. We have also discovered what types of houses there are and how we can make them using different materials.

After the February holidays, we will be looking at homes from the past in our history lessons.
