Year 2 Trip to Staircase House

Outside may have been torrential rain but inside Staircase House, it was dry, bright and full of hands on learning activities. The children began by testing the knowledge of our esteemed course leader - I’m not sure if she was quite ready for the year 2 children's higher order thinking skills!

The children used role-play to re-enact the evening the fire broke out in London 1666, stepping back in time dressing as characters from the past including; Samuel Pepys, Mary his lady servant, fire marshalls, a link girl, King Charles II and his soldiers. We moved throughout the house acting out the terrible events that took place that evening and the children began to realise the devastating impact it would have had.

Catherine, our guide, explained that no real fires were planned during our visit we all laughed, as looking outside at the incessant downpours, it felt like a long time since we had a long, dry and hot summer like in 1666!

Linking in to our Science topic - Materials, the children learnt how to make a ‘wattle and daub panels’, by intertwining willow branches and pressing on clay to form a surface that could form a section of wall. Please visit our classroom to see our handywork, although we are not sure anyone would achieve ‘master builder’ status quite yet, but they certainly had fun!

If you are looking for family days out during the October half term, we can highly recommend a visit to the Stockport Museums.
