Year 5 & 6 Trip to Tatton

The children in Year 5 and 6 were whisked into a world of time travel for their recent trip to Tatton.

Year 5 swept into the land of the Saxon’s - Tata’s Tun! Tata was out hunting, but his wife was there to welcome us all...well sort of as we were a little worried that they may sell us as slaves! The Year 6 children time travelled as evacuee children to visit a faraway farm - Home Farm. Auntie Mabel was there to give them a warm welcome and provide toast.

Our guides helped the children examine what life was like for the Saxons, considering home life, work, battle, trade, food, language and materials used in daily life. The Saxon children were all soon put to work learning how to bake bread, weave and make a defensive wall using shields. The children worked so hard.  Thankfully they decided not to trade us all at the market...phew!

The evacuee’s also learnt many new skills and certainly were not let ‘off the hook’ in terms of work, learning the routines and important role of the farm during World War 2. They fed and looked after animals, sang popular wartime songs in the air raid shelter, organised the rationing to produce food cooked on a range and finally took on a few household chores! What a busy day!

Take a look at some photos from the trip here.
