Year 5 Trip to Jodrell Bank

Wow! What a fabulous trip! We got up close to the world-famous Lovell telescope and walked along the pathway close to its base.  We were treated to a talk and used a clockwork Solar System to learn about the Earth, Sun and planets.  We walked the Planet Path outside to discover the scale of our Solar System.  We were particularly lucky as Dr Datta accompanied us, she was our very own space expert, having many opportunities to put our space questions to her!

We completed four experiments exploring the strength of gravity on different planets, investigated the brightness of sunlight throughout the Solar System, discovered how craters are formed and performed a series of tests to identify a real meteorite!

In the Inflatable Planetarium, the pupils explored the current night sky, viewed the seasonal constellations as imagined by the Ancient Greeks, explored the visible planets and observed the different phases of the Moon.

We didn’t want to leave the Planetarium, most wanted to ‘move in’ and continue discovering new stars and planets.

A huge thank you to Dr Datta for personalising our trip to Jodrell Bank with her wealth of space knowledge and expertise in this area, we look forward to your next visit to class.
