From Playground to Staffroom: Why Teamwork is Our Ultimate Superpower

If you had told my younger self that one day I’d be voluntarily locked in a room with a group of colleagues, frantically trying to decode a series of cryptic padlocks before a digital timer hit zero, I’d have questioned your sanity. Yet, a few months ago, that is exactly where I found myself during a team-building exercise with the rest of the Forest Park staff. As the seconds ticked down, it wasn’t the loudest voice that saved us, nor was it the person who thought they had all the answers. It was the quiet observation of a colleague who noticed a pattern everyone else had missed, and the collective scramble to piece it together. We escaped with just fourteen seconds to spare.

That frantic, adrenaline-fueled session got me thinking about how we define success. In a world that often obsesses over individual accolades and personal bests, we can easily lose sight of a fundamental truth: the greatest human achievements are never a solo act. From the engineering marvels that put rovers on Mars to the harmony of a medical team in an operating theatre, greatness relies on collaboration.

At Forest Park, we believe that learning to row together is just as important as learning to steer your own boat.

Teamwork doesn’t just happen by accident; it has to be woven into the very fabric of everyday school life. Walk through our corridors on any given morning, and you won’t see rows of silent, isolated desks. Instead, you will see the vibrant, sometimes messy, and utterly brilliant architecture of collaboration in action:

In our science and STEM lessons, you’ll find our Year 6s huddled over electrical circuits identifying how to create brighter and dimmer bulbs and buzzers together. In early years and Key Stage 1, it’s visible in the complex negotiations of the role-play area or the shared creation of a playground fortress, where every child naturally finds their role – the architect, the builder, the storyteller. Our pupils don’t just learn what to think; they learn how to think together. When a project hits a snag, they are encouraged to talk through the friction, listen to opposing views, and pivot as a unit.

These moments are about far more than just completing a classroom task. They are the training grounds for essential life skills. By learning to collaborate, our pupils develop deep empathy, discover how to negotiate, and realise that a diverse group of minds will always out-think a solitary genius. They learn that a teammate’s success doesn’t diminish their own, it elevates it.

I have been incredibly proud this term to watch our oldest pupils mentor the youngest, seeing our school council debate playground initiatives with maturity, and watching our sports teams win (and sometimes lose) with equal amounts of grace and collective pride.

Our world is changing rapidly, and the problems our children will grow up to face will not be solved by individuals working in silos. They will be solved by teams. By fostering engagement, mutual respect, and collective problem-solving from the age of two all the way to eleven, we are ensuring our pupils leave us with a toolkit for life.

Behind all of this, of course, is our exceptional staff team at Forest Park, who model this collaborative spirit every day. They plan together, support one another through challenges, and celebrate each other’s triumphs. After all, we cannot expect our pupils to understand the magic of a team if they don’t see it lived by the adults around them.

As the old proverb beautifully puts it: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” At Forest Park, we are definitively choosing to go far, walking hand-in-hand, and enjoying every step of the journey together.
